Assignment 1

2) I am Laura Contreras and I'm a senior at Notre Dame. I'm majoring in Liberal Arts with a Spanish minor. My goal is to teach Spanish at a High Scool level. I came to the United States 7 years ago and as you'll imagine is been really hard for me to fit in this country (language/discrimination, immigrant). I believe this country has changed the way to view immigrants but I also believe we can do better in accepting everyone no matter the skin color we have. I said that because I would like to explore more about how the American Government can influence the way we think about different races and ethnicities. I would also like to compare the change that the Amerian government had during the pasts centuries on the topic of immigration.

3)
One of the concepts that caught my attention was, "autocracy",  this basically means that one person has the power to decide everything without consulting anyone. I respect everyone's opinions but this made me think in this country. I could not imagine if our president was an autocrat, I'm not saying that all the countries that have "autocracy" are governed poorly but I just could not imagine the United States been ruled by one person.

Another concept that was interesting for me was the "divine rights of theory" I already knew about this but for me was interesting to me to remember the meaning. The right to rule directly goes to the king or queen because God decided that way. This means that people had no other choice, they were not able to decide no matter how unjust this was. If they decided to go against the power of the King or Queen they also were against God.

One of the quotes that really caught my attention was, "People often say, in a democracy decisions are made by a majority of the people. Of course, that is not true. Decisions are made by a majority of those who make themselves heard and who vote - A very different thing." (Walter H. Judd) For me, these words mean that even democracy is not a democracy. What do I mean by that? One example is here in the United States the people who choose the government is the people who can vote. Millions of people are not able to vote and the can't make themselves heard. These people are not able to express what they think and what they want for them and their families.

This quote was very interesting for me, "Politics is the process of determining who gets what, when, and how." Harold Lasswell
