Chapter 17

Laura Contreras        I believe that wildfires should be put out by  firefighters. There are many ways in which the government can control or prevent a fire like digging trenches, remove dead trees before a heatwave or burn out the dry grass before a heatwave so they have control over the fire. These are just some examples that I think are better to do.  The International Association of Fire and Rescue Services (CTIF) published an article in 2018, " Many believe dead trees should be completely removed from the California forests, especially partially burned trees from previous forest fires, as dry wood and other vegetation may be more susceptible to catching on fire during droughts"(CTIF) For me what the article says is right, and are the principal causes of the fires in California, but  who's the responsible? The book mentions that the main responsibility is on the state governor. "Part of every governor's...

Federalism

The first point that I would like to mention is the basis of Federalism.  There where many reasons why the founding fathers opted for a federal system and the federal structure of the government. I think one of the main advantages of federalism in the United States is that promotes the diversity of opinions. The other advantage its that because the federal system establishes two levels of government, these two levels have the power to take action, if one level does not achieve a desired political goal at one level,  the other level can give the support of elected representatives. The federal system in the United States is established by the Constitution and powers are divided between the central government and regional. Another advantage of the federalists as like is mention in the book, "Even in the days when the United States consisted of only thirteen states, its geographic was larger than that of France or England" (pg. 50)      The s...

Module 2

Laura Contreras Intro to American  Government Patti Andrews   Sep. 13 2020 Read Ch. 2 1.  Is it a strength or a weakness of the US Constitution that it is open to such widely-ranging interpretations? Can you point to examples of some consequences of this characteristic of the US Constitution?      I think that is a weakness because people interpret the constitution in different ways. Some people do not include everyone in the constitution and that makes a big problem. One example was presented on page 45, "Americans fighting the Revolutionary War agreed that they were fighting for liberty and equality. Once the war was over, however, there was little consensus on the meaning of these terms, and Americans have been at odds over how they should be interpreted for the last two hundred years or more." (Sidlow) 2.  Please pull out a passage or two from the Declaration and reflect on ways in which the USA as of 2020 has, or has not, lived up to the sentiment...

Assignment 1

2) I am Laura Contreras and I'm a senior at Notre Dame. I'm majoring in Liberal Arts with a Spanish minor. My goal is to teach Spanish at a High Scool level. I came to the United States 7 years ago and as you'll imagine is been really hard for me to fit in this country (language/discrimination, immigrant). I believe this country has changed the way to view immigrants but I also believe we can do better in accepting everyone no matter the skin color we have. I said that because I would like to explore more about how the American Government can influence the way we think about different races and ethnicities. I would also like to compare the change that the Amerian government had during the pasts centuries on the topic of immigration.
